CHARCOAL BURNER VILLAGES
SOME OF THE POOREST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD LABOUR IN INTENSE HEAT FOR VERY LITTLE.
MEETING THESE PEOPLE is a heart-rending experience.
Cutting the thorny bushes is dangerous work - smake-bites and loss of limbs is a daily fear.
Some of the women know they are dying but labour on to feed their children. Their lives are wretched.
FPSI is therefore sponsoring two ways to help.
To begin we have funded new courses in sewing & already lives are changed out of all recognition.
The noxious bushes are harvested for their twiggy timber, which is stacked carefully and ignited to create intense heat. The climate itself means these familes work at temperatures of about 40 degrees! All would wish to do something else but at present they feel lucky if they can be taken on for a day's work to feed their families. It's a precarious life.
For older workers who may find the courses too difficult we may provide funds for goat rearing so they have a proper income.
